December 26, 2024As fireworks are now legal in local areas for New Year’s celebrations, its important to think about how to keep your loved ones safe if you choose to discharge fireworks.
Fireworks are a staple of many holidays, but they can be just as dangerous as they are fun– with thousands of people injured or burned due to firework-related accidents each year.
To ensure you can enjoy the spectacle safely, follow these key firework safety tips while celebrating:
Only Purchase Legal Fireworks – First and foremost, always purchase fireworks from reputable, licensed vendors. In many places, there are strict laws governing the sale and use of fireworks, with certain types of fireworks banned entirely due to their danger. Stick to fireworks that are legal in your area, and never attempt to make or modify your own fireworks, as this greatly increases the risk of accidents.
Read the Instructions Carefully – Each firework comes with a set of safety instructions. While it may seem tempting to skip over them in the excitement, these instructions provide essential information for lighting and handling the firework safely. For example, certain fireworks require you to light them from a specific angle or distance, and ignoring this could lead to malfunction or injury.
Light Fireworks in a Clear, Open Area – Choose a location that is away from buildings, dry grass, trees, and other flammable materials. Ideally, set off fireworks in an open, flat area such as a large backyard or a designated firework zone. A clear area allows fireworks to discharge safely without posing a risk to people or property.
Keep a Safe Distance – When lighting fireworks, always maintain a safe distance from the device and any bystanders. Follow the instructions regarding how far to stand—typically, this distance ranges from 20 to 50 feet, depending on the type of firework. Fireworks can malfunction, and even if they don’t, the risk of flying sparks and debris is ever-present.
Never Relight a “Dud” Firework – Sometimes a firework may fail to ignite, or it may go off partially and stop. Never attempt to relight a “dud” firework. If a firework doesn’t go off as expected, wait at least 20 minutes before approaching it. Then, carefully dispose of it by soaking it in water to ensure it is completely safe before discarding it.
Keep Water and Fire Extinguishers on Hand – Accidents can happen, and it’s essential to be prepared. Have a bucket of water, a garden hose, or a fire extinguisher nearby in case of a fire. If a firework starts a fire, quickly extinguish it to prevent further damage or injury. In case of severe burns or injuries, know where the nearest hospital or emergency services are located.
Use Proper Firework Launchers and Holders – Some fireworks, like bottle rockets and Roman candles, require special launchers or holders. Never try to light these fireworks without a secure base, as they can easily tip over and shoot in unexpected directions, causing harm. Always use the appropriate holder to stabilize the firework before igniting it.
Wear Safety Gear – While fireworks can be fun, they can also be unpredictable. Protect yourself by wearing safety gear such as safety glasses to shield your eyes from flying debris and heat. Sturdy, closed-toe shoes and long sleeves can help reduce the risk of burns.
Supervise Children and Pets – Keep children and pets at a safe distance from fireworks, and never let them handle them unsupervised. Even sparklers, which are often thought of as harmless, burn at temperatures of up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit (1,100 degrees Celsius), which can easily cause severe burns if mishandled. It’s a good idea to assign an adult to supervise kids during firework displays. For pets, the loud noises and bright flashes of fireworks can be frightening. Keep pets inside and away from windows where they can see or hear the fireworks. Some pets may react by running away, so ensure they are securely confined indoors.
Dispose of Fireworks Safely – After the fun is over, don’t forget to dispose of fireworks properly. Soak used fireworks in water before throwing them away to prevent them from reigniting. Never throw fireworks into a trash can without wetting them first. Fireworks are still dangerous if left unattended or improperly disposed of.
Consider Attending Professional Firework Displays Instead – One of the safest ways to enjoy fireworks is by attending a professional fireworks show, where trained experts handle all aspects of the display. These shows are conducted in large, open spaces with safety measures in place, minimizing the risks to spectators. If you’re unsure about handling fireworks on your own, consider leaving it to the professionals.
Those choosing to use fireworks must follow the dates, times, and location regulations put in place by Lafourche Parish law enforcement. Please note that fireworks are NOT allowed in the City of Thibodaux or the town of Golden Meadow, except Oak Ridge Park. Fireworks can be legally discharged during the following times:
- December 15-23, 2024: 9:00 AM-9:00 PM
- Christmas Eve, 2024: 9:00 AM-Midnight
- Christmas Day, 2024: 9:00 AM-Midnight
