November 7, 2024During the regular meeting on November 6, 2024, several community members spoke in front of the Terrebonne Parish Council to express discontent with Parish President Jason Bergeron’s actions this past Saturday.
Parish President Bergeron was seen on Saturday, November 2, 2024 driving through downtown Houma in a decorated public vehicle, with a life-sized, cardboard cutout of former President Trump. Concerns do not revolve around the elected official’s expression of support, but rather if the Parish President was using taxpayer property to promote a candidate in the 2024 Presidential Election— which would violate both the state constitution and the state election code for an elected official to use public property for political activity.
“This action was inappropriate and should not have been done, because after all, he is working for Terrebonne Parish– and Terrebonne Parish includes us, the public,” said community member Apryll Wallis. “It may not bother you and it may not bother some people, but it certainly bothers us.”
“I stand before you as a citizen of Terrebonne Parish who is appalled by the actions of our Parish President,” said a following community member, addressed as Ms. Xochitl. “We are not going to let this rest.”
Parish President Bergeron assured council and audience members that he would make a public statement regarding his actions soon.
“All we can say right now is that there is a process that this goes through, and it is currently going through that process,” said Council Chairman John Amedée.
