As the final firework sales season is well underway, Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government urges residents to be safe and knowledgeable when buying and using fireworks and provided these tips and reminders:
  • It is illegal to sell and or set off fireworks within Houma city limits.
  • Know when to celebrate:
    • December 31 from from dusk until 1 a.m. on January 1
    • January 1 from dusk until 10 p.m.
  • Verify your vendor by requesting to see permitting information from any retail firework business before you buy.
  • Check the labels. Fireworks should be clearly labeled with the name of the item, the manufacturer’s name , and the instructions for proper use.
  • Have your ID ready. You have to be 18 or older to purchase fireworks.
  • Measure your space. Dentonate fireworks at least 200 feet away from structures, vehicles, and trash piles.
  • Act accordingly. Be aware of your surroundings, and use sealer judgement. Never detonate fireworks while impaired.
  • Dispose properly. Soak detonated fireworks in water before disposing of them in the trash to reduce the risk of resignation and fire.
  • Supervise minors. People under 15 must have close adult supervision. Young children should never detonate fireworks.
Residents are urged to be especially mindful of the ongoing drought in our area. Take into account the dryness of your surroundings when choosing a safe location for setting off fireworks, and be sure to properly soak detonated fireworks in water before disposing of them.
