The Port Fourchon Coastal Wetlands Park was honored by the American Association of Port Authorities last week for Excellence in Environmental Practices (Small Ports).

Only two of these awards are given, as they recognize programs or projects that improve environmental quality in a number of ways, including port beautification and natural resource restoration.
The Coastal Wetlands Park is a one-of-a-kind project where dredged materials from an adjacent slip filled in an area of more than 100 acres.
The open water foot print was transformed and comes complete with a meandering tidal creek and wharf where someone can launch a kayak or non-motorized boat for an immersive experience in an actual mitigation area.
Future plans for the Coastal Wetlands Park call for a two-story orientation hub that will feature self-focusing viewfinders and learning boards.

On hand to receive the award were Commissioners Mike Callais, Rodney Gisclair, Reggie Ledet, and Tom Pitre.
