Entergy Corporation is warning that con artists are calling people in Louisiana with phony threats to disconnect electrical service.

The utility corporation says the scammers claim that service will be disconnected within one hour if payment of an overdue electric bill isn’t made. Then they direct the person who takes the call to make a payment electronically, sometimes through a system known as MoneyPak.

Entergy says it does sometimes place courtesy calls to people at risk of disconnection but the recorded calls never demand immediate payment.

Also, the company says, while Entergy bills can be paid by phone or credit card, it can be done only through a third-party vendor known as BillMatrix.

The company says suspicious calls about Entergy bills should be reported to the company at 1-800-ENTERGY.
