March 18, 2010Jerry Hebert was found dead Sunday afternoon when he and his truck were pulled from the Intercoastal Canal in Larose where it intersects with Bayou Lafourche.
According to Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Lesley Hill Peters, the 19-year-old was last seen Friday, March 5, at Premium’s bar, formally The Greenhouse, in Cut Off. Authorities have been searching for his whereabouts since last week.
Hebert’s debit card was used at Premium’s last Tuesday, but authorities say no one there recalls whether Hebert himself presented the card. It had not been used since.
His family reported him missing Friday upon receiving a call from a co-worker that he had not shown up for his shift at Seaport in Fourchon, Peters said.
Sunday afternoon, detectives and patrol deputies noticed tire tracks leading to the Intercoastal Canal from La. Highway 657 in Larose, she noted.
Lafourche Parish water patrol deputies used sonar, and they picked up a large object submerged at the end of the roadway, Peters explained.
A tow truck was called, and Hebert’s 1995 black GMC Yukon was pulled from the water with Hebert’s body still inside, she said.
According to state troopers, Hebert failed to make a right turn causing the vehicle to go off road, striking an embankment causing the vehicle to overturn and come to rest in the water.
Hebert was wearing a seatbelt, but he received fatal injuries in the single vehicle crash, state police said.
Troopers say speed may have been a factor in the crash. However, the exact time of the crash and alcohol or drug usage is still unknown.
Troopers are continuing their investigation.
