April 9, 2009The 5th annual “Running of the Bears” is set for Saturday April 18 at 9 a.m. in Franklin.
Part of St. Mary Parish’s Bear Festival, the 5K Fun Run and Walk begins and ends on Main Street in front of the parish courthouse.
The first male and female to finish will receive a $100 gift certificate to the Cypress Bayou Casino, courtesy of KBZE 105.9FM and KFRA 1390AM, the official radio stations for the race.
All proceeds from the event will benefit the Teche Action Clinic in Franklin and surrounding areas.
Open since 1974, Teche Action Clinic is a federally qualified health center that treats patients on a sliding scale. It operates a school-based clinic at West St. Mary High School in Baldwin, as well as two clinics in Terrebonne and one in St. John parishes. The center is soon expanding to Morgan City and Assumption and St. Charles parishes.
Pre-registration for the fun run and walk is $16 in advance. Entry forms can be downloaded at www.kbze.com. Registration is $20 on the day of the event.
Early registrants will receive a commemorative T-shirt. Those interested in participating in the run/walk – minus the T-shirt – can register for $11.

The Bayou Teche Bear Festival was named best New Event of 2006 by the state Association of Fairs and Festivals. It is held April 17-18 along Franklin’s Main Street and the historic Bayou Teche.
