November 11, 2010The Rotary Club of Houma is sharing in a collaborative effort to help improve living standards in Haiti.
A year ago the RCH joined efforts with 15 other Rotary Club chapters in Louisiana and donated $15,000 and drilling expertise to construct a water well outside a school in Jeremie, Haiti – approximately 100 miles west of the earthquake ravaged Port-au-Prince.
This year, South Louisiana Rotarians want to drill more water wells, complete schools and construct privacy bath stations in that same Haitian community, which doubled in size from 30,000 to 60,000 when it became a gathering place for earthquake refugees.
In an effort to raise money needed for this project the RCH is hosting a fundraiser on Monday at the Woodmen of the World Hall in Houma.
The guest speaker during this event will be retired U.S. Army Gen. Russel L. Honore. Honore is probably best known in Louisiana as having been commander of the Department of Defense Joint Task Force following Hurricane Katrina.
Honore carries a long list of credentials and awards collected during his 37-year military career. He now works as a consultant and speaker addressing the building of a culture of preparedness.
In addition to speaking to Rotarians in Houma, this emergency preparedness expert is also planning to address Rotarians in Lake Charles, Lafayette and Baton Rouge on separate occasions.
Honore is scheduled to speak on Leadership in the 21st Century during the RCH event. For tickets, call (985) 868-5881.
