Merkle “Skipper” B. Kornegay Jr., 74, died at 9:07 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019. Born, Nov. 14, 1944, he was a native of Chelsea, Mass., and resident of Houma.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Hilda Mayet Kornegay; daughter, Elizabeth Ann (Chris Provost) Kornegay, son, Charles Kornegay; grandchildren, Taylor Kornegay Diez, Caden Kornegay, Chloe Fontenot, and Troy Fontenot Jr.; numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved pup, Louie.

He was very involved in his community as a member and president of the Kiwanis Club, a CASA of Terrebonne volunteer, where he was awarded CASA Advocate of the year for the state of Louisiana. He was a current member of the board of directors for Krewe of Terreanians and past King and president for 14-plus years. He was a parishioner of Saint Anthony of Padua church and Saint Francis de Sales Cathedral. He was the president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Louisiana. He was the retired owner and partner of Coastal Insurance Agency, currently USI. He was a huge supporter and sponsor of the Terrebonne Parish American Legion Baseball team.

He loved his camp in Grand Isle and loved playing cards with his family and friends. He had a passion for Mardi Gras unlike no other. He was a big blues music fan and loved BB King. He was loved by all who knew him and will be dearly missed.
