Mulberry Elementary School in Houma will host its annual Veterans Day program Nov. 10, beginning at 10 a.m., at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center. The community is invited to join the youngsters as they pay tribute to veterans for their many sacrifices for the liberty and security of our country.

Each grade level will perform songs and skits in tribute of America’s soldiers, said event organizer Mary Aucoin. The Mulberry Elementary Band will also perform as well as two soloists, Joelie Cantrelle and Sarah Bernard.

Admission to the event is free.

Aucoin said an addition to this year’s program will be a special presentation to a Terrebonne Parish family whose son lost his life in the Vietnam War. “We think it is going to be a very touching moment, and is really a way to bring home the sacrifice our men and women in the military and their families make every day,” she said.

Because the program has grown so rapidly over the years, it is held at the Civic Center to accommodate veterans and their families. “We invite all veterans from the Tri-parishes to join us,” Aucoin said.

Each veteran is invited to introduce himself, note which branch of military he served in and what role he played, she said. “It is so tear-jerking because you see all the different wars these men and women – young and old – have been in. From World War II and Vietnam to Iraq, we honor them all. The public is welcome to come and celebrate with us what the veterans of our area have done to help us enjoy our wonderful lives and to ensure the safety of this wonderful country we live in,” she said.
