Our Mistake
June 24, 2015Amateur radio operators will be showing off how their radios work when other forms of communication fail, at the Terrebonne Office of Emergency Preparedness, 112 Capital Blvd. in Houma this weekend.
The Thibodaux Amateur Radio Club is participating in the national Amateur Radio Field Day exercise for the second consecutive year.
The local event will begin at noon Saturday and end at noon Sunday. The public is invited from noon until 6 on Saturday and again on Sunday, starting at noon. Operators will be demonstrating how they can serve local governments when their interoperability radios fail, because the radios used by amateurs don’t rely on the Internet and can work with very low bandwidths, which means during a disaster like a hurricane, for example, information can be exchanged.
On Saturday, the local operators will test their equipment, getting in touch with as many other operators as possible, using voice transmission and Morse Code.
