Downed economy, cold makes hard job tougher

Coril W. Thompson, 89, a native of Terrebonne Parish, La., and a resident of Houma, La., died Friday, Jan. 8, at 11:15 a.m.

He is survived his wife, Helen Maryland Thompson; sons, Forrest (Mary), Caril, Marvin, Germaine, Darnell, Bruce, Frederick and Gerard (Denise) Thompson; daughters, Arnetta (Frank) Hawkins, Dayle (Willie Sr.) Bolden, Gwendolyn (Filmore) Crenshaw, Elaine (John Sr.) Scott, Sandra (Melvin) Peyton and Connie Harris and fiance’ Frederick Patterson; foster brother, Earl Thompson; sister, Delnot T. Simmons; foster sister, Leona Davis; 34 grandchildren; and 39 great-grandchildren.

He is buried at Union Benevolent Cemetery. He was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. Joseph H. Thompson and Louise Lopez Thompson; two sons, Jerome James Thompson and James Henry Thompson; and his grandparents, Fred Lopez and Laura Thomas Lopez, and Forrest and Juliane Prevost Thompson.

He was a member of Residence Baptist Church, an Army veteran, a member of AFL-CIO Union, Terrebonne Housing Authority, Mason, Blaine C. Claylodge No. 14 F&AM, a musician and member of the Terrebonne Parish Men Day Association, a member of the Golden Social Aid Association and the Union Benevolent Society. He was employed by the Terrebonne Parish School Board as a maintenance man and carpenter. Bro. Coril served his country during World War II, he toured many countries including Japan, France, Italy, Ireland, Guam, Germany and Korea. He often told his children and grandchildren about his experiences during the war.
