The Louisiana Folklore Society is excited to present their August 2024 Bayou Culture Collaborative guest speaker, Houma-native Corinne Martin, who will be speaking on the importance of native medicinal plants.

Corinne Martin is a certified clinical herbalist, an amateur naturalist, an ordained Interfaith Minister, and a certified spiritual director, alongside the author of three books and numerous articles on medicinal plant healing. Corinne has recently retired from teaching holistic and integrative health studies at the University of Southern Maine School of Nursing, and resides in both Louisiana and Maine. Corinne will be speaking about her book titled, Healing on the Home Ground – Louisiana’s Wild Medicinal Plants.

“As we try to navigate the challenges of Louisiana’s at-risk areas, learning how to identify, use, and protect the state’s many medicinal plants can offer one approach,” reads a statement from the Bayou Culture Collaborative. “Becoming familiar with the healing herbs all around us, we discover practical everyday ways of not only supporting our health, but also of living gently on our beloved and beleaguered home ground.”

The Bayou Culture Gatherings are monthly meetings of people and organizations focused on preserving Louisiana’s heritage and examining the effects of land loss on local culture. The upcoming gathering featuring Corinne Martin will take place on August 23, 2024 from 12:00-1:30 PM. Those interested in attending can register here.

The Louisiana Folklore Society offers these gatherings to share perspectives on the human dimension of coastal land loss. In partnership with the Center for Bayou Studies at Nicholls State Univ. and the South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center, the Bayou Culture Gatherings are supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Louisiana Division of the Arts, the Office of Cultural Development and the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, and the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program.
