October 2, 2024October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and The Haven in Houma is working to bring support to survivors by taking action and raising awareness to help break the cycle of domestic violence.
“Domestic Violence Awareness Month is observed every October, and serves as a time to raise awareness about domestic violence, its impact on individuals and communities, and the resources available to those suffering,” explained Julie Pellegrin, Executive Director of The Haven. “This year, the Haven is “Honoring Resilience” by placing a particular emphasis on sharing stories of strength and survival, alongside our numerous events to unite the community.”
The schedule for Domestic Violence Awareness Month around Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes is as follows:
- October 3, 2024 – Paint the Parish Purple Day
- Join the Haven in wearing purple in support of Domestic Violence Awareness Month
- October 8, 2024 – Lafourche Parish DVAM Proclamation
- Lafourche Council Meeting, Matthews Government Complex at 5:00 PM.
- October 8, 2024 – Terrebonne Parish Candlelight Vigil
- Remembering victims of domestic violence. Houma Courthouse Square, 7910 Main Street at 6:00 PM.
- October 10, 2024 – Day of Action: #GeauxPurple

- October 15, 2024 – Lafourche Parish Candlelight Vigil
- Remembering victims of domestic violence. Lafourche Central Market in Raceland at 6:00 PM.

Since 1993, The Haven has been providing safety, advocacy, crisis response, and education to survivors of sexual assault and domestic, dating, and family violence– proudly serving Terrebonne, Lafourche, and Assumption parishes. In 2022, The Haven served as a refuge for 442 survivors, provided resources and shelter to 87 children and 101 women who escaped abusive homes, responded to 1165 hotline calls from survivors in crisis, and helped 69 survivors obtain temporary restraining orders against their abusers.
