March 5, 2007The Junior Auxiliary of Houma is hosting its annual Bayou Breezes Tour of Homes March 24.
Between 1 and 5 p.m., locals can take a self-guided tour through six stately homes, enjoy the hospitality of the Auxiliary and benefit the community at the same time.
Tickets to the event are $25.
Co-chairwoman and JA member Rachel Hebert said this is the third year the organization has held the annual fund-raiser. She’s been finalizing plans for the event with co-chair Shelly Toups.
“It’s been so exciting to watch this grow,” she said. “Each year, we sell more and more tickets. We’ve gotten tremendous feedback; the community really looks forward to this event.”
And the list for potential tour homes for 2008 is already being collected. “The Bayou Breezes Tour of Homes gives homeowners the opportunity to showcase the architectural and interior design of their home,” Hebert said.
Each home on this year’s tour was selected for its distinct style, she noted. “These homes have a lot of history. That’s one of the things we try to do n select homes with a lot of unique features.”
And this year’s tour will not disappoint, the co-chair said.
Visitors will be able to walk through the entire home. Hebert said the homeowners’ are present to answer questions, and Junior Auxiliary members serve as tour guides.
And because most of the tour takes place indoors, the event will be held rain or shine. “No matter what the weather does, you’ll be able to see the beauty of each of these homes,” she said.
At each of the homes, visitors will also be able to sample dishes featured in the Bayou Breezes Cookbook, another fundraiser for the Junior Auxiliary. The cookbooks are available on a regular basis.
They’ll be sold for $21.64 at each of the tour homes, Hebert said.
“These homes are so unique and really capture the essence of southern living,” she explained. “They are all homes with individual charm and character. Which home is the best? Well, they’re all the best. That’s the real beauty of the tour.”
The featured homes on the 2007 tour include: • 114 Bocage Dr., owned by Mr. and Mrs.Andrea and Stephanie Olivier; • 389 Keeley-Anne Dr., owned by Mr. Michael Hawthorne; • 197 Regal Row, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Jonathon and Pam Russo; • 4338 Hwy. 311, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Leslie and Amy Bundy; • 138 Versailles, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Jim and Tera Gaidry Jr.; • 401 Oak Ally Dr., owned by Col. The Junior Auxiliary of Houma was established in 1972 by a group of local women. The nonprofit organization focuses on the needs of children and the local community.
Since its inception, the local Junior Auxiliary is credited with helping more than 15,000 children and their families, Hebert said. The chapter’s volunteers have donated over 6,000 hours to cloth, feed, educate and comfort children from Terrebonne Parish.
Among the many service projects sponsored by the local group are: Reading is Fun, literacy program; Hearts to Hands, emergency relief to families in need; Keep Kids Warm, which distributes coats; Kids on the Block, puppet shows stressing physical and sexual abuse prevention; Sneaker Giveaway, providing shoes to youngsters; Snuggle Bears, handmade bears for youngsters in hospitals and shelters; and Young at Heart, providing activities to those in nursing homes.
