Area environment prompts holiday alternatives
December 5, 2011Football is still going full-bore in the Tri-parishes. But basketballs are set to pound the hardwood floors of Houma this month.
The Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center is hosting both the Nicholls State men’s and women’s basketball teams this month in a double header.
The event, sponsored by Rouses Supermarket tops off at 5:30 p.m. when DoBee Plaisance’s women’s team takes on Florida A&M.
Immediately following that game, the Colonels’ men’s team, anchored by veteran coach J.P. Piper, squares off with Loyola-New Orleans.
The season is early, but both the Nicholls squads are showing promise in their new seasons.
The men’s team has struggled with inexperience and has suffered a handful of tough defeats, but the team also scored a victory against Houston Baptist and has progressed throughout the year.
The women’s team has also gotten better in recent weeks and appears poised for a run at the Southland Conference Tournament.
The Colonels have picked up victories against UL-Lafayette this season. They also defeated Weber State at a Thanksgiving Tournament in Oregon.
Both players have plenty of local flavor. Houma native Sumar Leslie anchors the women’s team, while former Ellender standout Trevon Lewis is off to a strong start for the men.
