“Just wait until you have children of your own!”

That was the often-repeated battle cry my mother exclaimed when I was a child.

But I was impervious to the alleged threat. Until I had a child, that is.

May 8 is the day set aside this year to honor moms across the globe. And, speaking as the parent of a 17-year-old, one day is not nearly enough.

But at least it is a day. A day when my teen will take to the kitchen to prep a special brunch. It’s a throwback to my younger days. Rising at dawn to burn toast, leaving egg remnants spilled on the kitchen counter and a sink full of dirty dishes, which my mom dutifully cleaned after suffering through the meal my brothers and I fought over.

And better understanding what it is like to be a mom, I know that likely, no matter how much yelling and hurt feelings emerged from the kitchen, no matter how many egg shells were accidentally cooked into the eggs and no matter how last-minute our homemade cards appeared, my mother enjoyed every one of them. It’s what moms do, after all.

May is also chockfull of great things to do and places to take mom if you want to keep her special day going.

Festivals, fairs and family-fun times can be had across the Tri-parish region or within a gas tank’s drive.

Spring is in full bloom and summer will be here soon enough. So, hop off the sofa, hit the streets and let the good times roll.

And to all the moms out there, you rock!
