June Activities

The Terrebonne Parish Library System annual summer reading program begins on May 26 and ends July 25. Again this summer, all members of the family can participate in fun activities and get prizes for recreational reading during summer vacation. Children through the 6th grade can sign up for the reading program entitled “Once Upon a Time” where they can read books to win prizes, participate in exciting arts-and-craft workshops, and see live professional performances. Certificates and coupons from local businesses for free stuff are awarded to children who complete the Summer Reading Club by reading ten books. Also, children in kindergarten through the sixth grade will be eligible to enter the drawing for one of seven bikes being given away at each branch when they receive their completion certificate. The Kiwanis Club of Houma and Friends of the Terrebonne Public Library are sponsoring this give away. All branches of the Terrebonne Parish Library System encourage children to spend time reading for fun during summer vacation, which keeps up their reading skills that were learned during the school year. The Friends of the Library will again offer special Summer Reading Club T-shirts and book bags that will be available for sale beginning May 18, 2009 at all branches.

Exhibits at Main Library

(Folk) A.R.T. IS is an artifact-based exhibit that features the work of 21 self-taught artists from nine Southern states. Through various media including painting, textiles, and woodcarving, these individuals illustrate their artistic vision and spiritual journeys, document social and political issues, and share memories of family and home. Their work is often referred to as “visionary” or “outsider” art because it does not typically fall within the parameters of fine or contemporary art. Through text panels and photographs, exhibit visitors will learn about the artists’ inspiration, and the context in which they work. The exhibit will be on display during the month of June.

Barbie Galore! Cherie MaHaffey, children’s department manager at the main library, will display her collection of Collector’s Edition Barbies in the library foyer. Cherie has well over 150 Barbies, and many of them will be on display during June and July. All are in mint condition and remain in their original packaging. Children will love them, and adults will remember their childhood! Remember, the library is so much more than just books!
