Proclaimed to be the Catfish Capital of the Universe, Des Allemands will hold its three-day weekend celebration to honor this illustrious, whiskered fish and to raise money for St. Gertrude Catholic Church.

Now in its 36th year, the Louisiana Catfish Festival starts at 5 p.m. Friday, July 9. It recommences on Saturday, July 10, at 10 a.m. and again on Sunday, July 11, at 10:30 a.m. The good times don’t stop until well into each night.

The fest features pay-one-price rides ($20 for half-day/ $55 for weekend), games, road races on Saturday (registration required), a country store, craft booths, a plant booth, live entertainment, dancing and so much more. Raffle tickets are available to those who want a chance to win cash prizes, a beautiful quilt or even a woodcarving replica of the Lombardi trophy signed by the Saints, courtesy of Landry Dempster.

The musical line-up includes the Top Cats on Friday, Don Rich, Ken Marvel Band and Charles Mann, Vin Bruce and Treater on Saturday and Tout Les Soir, Aaron Foret and Seabrook on Sunday.

Of course, catfish and seafood are on the menu, served up almost everyway imaginable. The food is the main attraction of the festival, according to Sherry Folse, secretary for the Louisiana Catfish Festival Board.

“The food is the number one feature,” Folse said. “It is all homemade and delicious. You have your seafood gumbo prepared on the spot. You have your catfish sauce piquante. You have your catfish boullettes rolled and fried right there. And there are catfish platters, soft shell crab po-boys, plus the usual hamburgers, hot dogs, nachos and cheese and so much more.”

The festival is held on the grounds of St. Gertrude Catholic Church, 17292 La. 631 in Des Allemands. Admission and parking are free.
