The Vandebilt Art Club and Art Department is hosting its 3rd annual Soup Bowl Benefit Saturday, Nov. 8, from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

The event will be held at the Brother Alfred Kolb Center on the school campus, 209 South Hollywood Road in Houma.

Proceeds from the benefit will be donated to the Books of Hope/Memory Project, where advanced high school art students create original portraits for children who have been abandoned, orphaned, abused, or neglected.

“We wanted to use the talents that the students have and try to do some good with that,” said Laurie Robichaux, art teacher and art club sponsor.

The club has been involved for years with Books of Hope, a service-learning program in which U.S. schools sponsor a school abroad and create books to help meet the students’ educational needs.

“Last year, we created books that were sent to Uganda, and they will likely go to Uganda again,” Robichaux said.

Benefit attendees can dine on up to a dozen soups prepared by volunteers and club members, with dessert to follow.

There will be a silent auction of hand-glazed soup bowls created by the art club, art students and Vandebilt faculty.

The Vandebilt Catholic Jazz Band will provide musical entertainment.

Tickets can be purchased in advance for $12 from any art club member or in the Vandebilt office. Tickets are $15 at the door.
