Thibodaux Regional Medical Center continued its long commitment to community health and wellness this week with a donation that will make the children at Raceland Lower and Upper Elementary Schools smile for decades.

The hospital sponsored new playground equipment at the schools as part of its ongoing initiative to improve the health and wellness of the young people in Lafourche Parish and in the surrounding area.

According to the Centers for Disease control, our state ranks fourth-highest in the U.S. in child obesity, which can cause significant health problems in the future.

TRMC CEO Greg Stock said donations like this one teach kids to be active early, which can curb some of those problems.

“As a community health care leader, we are committed to helping improve the health and wellness of the children in our area,” Stock said. “Exercise and nutrition education can have a very positive impact on the health and wellness of our youth.”

Tina Guidry and Rebecca Johnson, the principals for Raceland Lower and Upper, respectively, said they were thankful to the hospital for the donation, adding that it will allow hundreds of children the chance to play and be active.

“Thank you, Thibodaux Regional, for sponsoring this playground equipment for our school,” Guidry said. “Our students truly deserve this.”

“Our students work hard to meet the ever-increasing standards we teach in our school curriculum,” Benoit said. “They should have a place to play. We must reward them for their efforts and help promote physical activity to improve the health and wellness of the children in the community.”
