December 15, 2011After two months that involved a runoff election, procedural questions and filings for a special vote, Terrebonne Parish Chief Deputy Assessor Loney Grabert, who has been serving as assessor since the Nov. 12 death of assessor Gene Bonvillain, will be permitted to fill that spot, until officially being sworn into office in January 2013, after being the only candidate that had filed for special election qualifying on Friday.
Grabert was elected to office on Nov. 19, but the unexpected passing of his late predecessor cast questions among state and parish officials on how to handle a death in office during an election period that a Secretary of State’s spokesman said never occurred previously in Louisiana.
Having spent a large portion of his career working in the assessor’s office, Grabert began his race for the seat against three contenders and ran on the platform of continuity following Bonvillain’s 16 years of leadership. Bonvillian did not seek re-election and intended to retire at the completion of his term.
“It’s nice to not have worry about another election and I can concentrate on the office,” Grabert said. “We want to keep things updated while moving forward and make the information as easily assessable to the public as possible.”
Select Terrebonne Parish voters will be asked on March 24, 2012 to select a justice of the peace for Ward 6. Candidate in that race include Republican George Doescher, Cathy LeBoeuf with no party affiliation and Republican Bill Underwood. All three candidates are from Montegut.
The March 24, 2012 ballot will also offer voters an opportunity to select representation among major political parties. Those individuals that qualified are as follows:
