April 8, 2010Earl J. Brown Sr., 85, a native of New Orleans, La., and resident of Raceland, La., died Thursday, April 1, 2010.
At Raceland High School, Mr. Brown collected more than six tons of metal for the War Scrap Drive. He left school in his junior year to join the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. A member of the 509th Bomber Group, 393rd Bomb Squad, he participated in the atom bomb test at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands.
After graduating from LSU, he taught and coached at Raceland High School. In 1956, he left the school system and joined the Lafourche Parish Recreation Board where he served as superintendent for 31 years.
In 1993, he joined the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, serving as a lieutenant.
Upon retirement, he earned degrees in history and criminal justice from Nicholls State University.
He later helped establish the Sheriff’s Reserve Program, horse patrol and acquired the land for the shooting range. He was also co-chairman of the Crisis Prevention Program with the Lafourche Parish School Board, chairman and activator of the Veteran’s Personalities of the South and Louisiana’s Extraordinary People, state commander of the National Association of Atomic Veterans and founder of the monument in Hero’s Veterans Memorial Park in Thibodaux and member of numerous civic organizations.
He is survived by his children, Marvin (Janet) Brown, Donna (Recey) Migues, Michael Brown, Lori (Paul) Bueker, Gary (Sonda) Brown, Barbara (fiancé Dwayne Schexnayder) Brown, Valerie (David) Folse, Errol (fiancée Danielle Curtis) Brown; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
