January 1, 2009The United Blood Services is asking residents to consider becoming platelet donors as the new year starts.
Platelets are small cytoplasmic bodies derived from cells that help circulate blood. They are primarily used for cancer patients, and because they have a short shelf life, are in abundant need, according to the United Blood Services.
“Most people know someone who has had cancer and even used platelets,” said spokeswoman Renee Morvant. “Give in honor of them; give because someone took the time to donate when your loved one or friend was in need.”
AB platelets are universal, which means even patients of another blood type can benefit from the donation, she noted.
As the community blood provider, United Blood Services supplies 50 south Louisiana medical facilities, including several in the Tri-parish area with needed blood and platelets, according to the Web site.
United Blood Services is located at 2000 Audubon Ave., Suite E, in Thibodaux and at 1234 David Drive, Suite 102 in Morgan City.
Donors must be at least 17 years old and weigh 110 pounds to give blood. Donors will receive a free T-shirt and cholesterol screening.
Morvant said donating platelets “may take as little or less of your time than a hair appointment … it’s relaxing, safe and lifesaving.”
Anyone interested in donating to a cancer patient is asked to call (985) 625-5433 or (985) 384-5671.
