Sheriff announces checkpoint

The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office will conduct a safety checkpoint today (June 11) during the daylight hours.

During the checkpoint, deputies will be checking motorists for seat belt violations, expired inspection tags and also expired or suspended driver’s licenses, among other violations.

The checkpoint is part of LPSO’s year-long campaign to raise awareness for these types of violations and to make the highways in the parish safer for all motorists.

A similar checkpoint took place along the northbound lane of La. Highway 1 in Cut Off last week.

During that checkpoint, deputies stopped 320 vehicles and reported the following violations:

• 6 expired motor vehicle inspection stickers

• 2 expired vehicle registrations

• 1 no driver’s license

• 6 seat belt violations

• 4 child restraint violations

Maryland fugitive snagged in Golden Meadow

A Maryland fugitive is awaiting extradition to his home state after Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office authorities located and arrested him in Golden Meadow.

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre said this week that Ronald E. Flawd, Jr., 48, of Maryland, was arrested in the small south Lafourche Parish community this week after it was learned that the suspect was wanted for parole violation.

Representatives with the State of Maryland Parole Commission contacted the LPSO on June 6 and told local authorities that it had been learned that Flawd was at a Golden Meadow hotel, and should be considered armed and dangerous.

Through investigation and with the assistance of the Golden Meadow Police Department, authorities were able to confirm that Flawd was at the motel.

That night at around 7 p.m., the suspect was spotted at the business where authorities took him into custody without incident.

He was taken to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux where he is currently awaiting extradition back to Maryland.

Flawd was on parole stemming from an October 2010 conviction for second-degree assault. He was also facing attempted murder charges in the incident, as he allegedly attacked his live-in girlfriend, allegedly choking her and breaking her arm before attacking her with a knife.

He was found not-guilty on the attempted murder charges, but was instead convicted of the assault.

In July 2013, Flawd was arrested for public possession of alcohol, and he failed to appear at a hearing for the charge and he did not notify his parole agent of the arrest. He also didn’t obtain permission before leaving his job or the state of Maryland – all conditions of his parole.

In addition to the assault charge, Flawd has a history of drug and weapon charges in both Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Driver charged with DWI, reckless operation after accident

A 36-year-old Ville Platte native is facing DWI charges after she allegedly drove her vehicle, despite blowing three times above the legal limit.

Last Wednesday at approximately 12:23 p.m., HPD said it received a call in reference to a female suspect sleeping behind the wheel of a vehicle near Lafayette Street.

Once on the scene, officers said they observed a Toyota Tundra truck crossing the center line several times, nearly hitting several vehicles head-on during its trek. The potentially harmful driving caused officers to conduct a traffic stop, which allowed officers to identify Jerrimy K. Davenport, of Rob Mac Road, Ville Platte, as the driver.

Upon contact with Davenport, authorities noticed that she appeared to be highly intoxicated. Officers then conducted field sobriety tests on Davenport and arrested her for DWI, taking her to the HPD offices where she allegedly tested three times above the legal limit for alcohol during chemical testing.

During her arrest, officers also noticed that Davenport’s driver’s license was suspended due to a prior DWI arrest. Police also said they found an opened cold beer bottle inside the truck.

Davenport is charged with DWI, reckless operation, operating vehicle with suspended driver’s license and open container in a motor vehicle.

She was taken to the Terrebonne Parish Jail where she awaited trial or bond at press time.
