October 17, 2007HOPE for Animals is hosting its 11th annual Dog Day Afternoon & Pet Photos with Santa affair Sunday, Oct. 21, at Peltier Park in Thibodaux, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Dog Day Afternoon is HOPE for Animals’ largest fund-raising event. This year’s function will feature a dog show with 14 categories, including “Best Trick,” “Best Halloween Costume,” “Cutest Puppy” and “Best of Show.”
A non-professional dog show, the event is open to all breeds, mixed and purebred, said HOPE for Animals member Billy Pitre. As a safety precaution, dogs must have proof of up-to-date vaccinations and dogs must be on a leash at all times.
Vicious, sick or dogs in heat will not be allowed to participate, he said.
To participate in the show, owners must be at least 12 years old or accompanied by an adult.
Pitre said Santa Claus will arrive at noon to take photos with pets and their owners. Professional photographer Adrian Gauthier will take the photos inside the park Recreation Center from noon to 3 p.m.
Over 30 prizes – ranging from cash prizes to gift certificates – will be raffled.
The day will begin with a Blessing of the Animals at 12:30 p.m. by the Rev. Joey Pilola, of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church of Nicholls State University in Thibodaux.
Registration will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
HOPE for Animals advocates for the humane treatment of animals. Volunteers who wanted to improve the quality of life for local animals chartered the organization several years ago.
