Parish President Archie Chaisson proclaimed the month of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Around the world, almost 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced physical or sexual violence at least once in their lifetimes. 1 in 15 children are exposed to domestic violence each year and 90% of these children are eyewitnesses to the violence. Children often internalize the violence and believe they are to blame, leading to low self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness. Children who grow up with domestic violence are 6 times more likely to commit suicide.

In 2023, the Lafourche Parish Law Enforcement Agencies responded to 1097 domestic violence related calls and 762 restraining orders were issued in Lafourche to victims of domestic violence seeking protection from their perpetrator. In 2023, The Haven provided a safe home for 71 women and children, answered 129 domestic violence and sexual assault crisis calls, and facilitated 353 counseling sessions to 67 survivors of domestic violence from Lafourche Parish.
