The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office has drop boxes in Thibodaux, Lockport and Cut Off specifically for prescription medications.
“We have always invited residents to drop off prescription medication anytime throughout the year with questions asked,” Lafourche Sheriff Craig Webre said. “These boxes take that invitation a step further, making the drop-off easier and faster.”
The boxes are located in the lobbies of the LPSO Administrative Office, 200 Canal Blvd., Thibodaux; the Criminal Operations Center, 805 Crescent Ave., Lockport; and the South Lafourche Substation, 102 W. 91st St., Cut Off.
Sheriff’s spokesman Brennan Matherne said the drug drop boxes were donated by the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators through a sponsorship by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana. Medicines left in the drop boxes are destroyed by the Lafourche Parish Drug Task Force.
Pills and liquids in consumer containers, as well as liquid products in their original containers are accepted. Matherne advised tightening caps to prevent leakage. Intravenous solutions, injectable drugs and syringes should not be dropped in the boxes, he said.
Matherne cited studies that show a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, and are frequently pilfered from home medicine cabinets. And flushing unwanted medicines down the toilet or tossing them in the trash pose potential safety and health hazards. •
