May 12, 2011The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced on Friday the awarding of a $7 million grant for the elevation of 43 homes in Terrebonne Parish.
FEMA funding is in part an action of mitigation resulting from damage incurred during Hurricane Gustav in 2008.
“This funding will assist residents wishing to better protect their homes against future flooding,” said FEMA Louisiana recovery officer deputy director of programs Andre Cadogan.
Properties to receive assistance have sustained multiple flood losses and repeated claims through the National Flood Insurance Program. They are all on the parish’s list of properties impacted with severe repetitive loss.
Property owners receiving designated funds must elevate their homes to the adopted advisory base flood elevation established by Terrebonne Parish for the areas where they live.
Other mitigation measures were considered, but the elevation project was determined to be the most cost effective and beneficial to the parish and the affected homeowners. The entire home elevation project is expected to be completed by 2014.
