Bayou Cane uses grant money for fire safety
October 7, 2010A 37-year-old Grand Isle man was killed early Sunday when he reportedly walked into the path of an oncoming vehicle, authorities said.
State Police Troop C spokesman Bryan Zeringue said Myles Brewer died after he was struck shortly after 4:30 a.m. by a 2009 Kia Spectra traveling south on La. Highway 1 near the Grand Isle Fire Station. The vehicle was driven by Jamar Sanders, 34, of Reserve.
Zeringue said Sanders spotted Brewer, but was looking at his cell phone at the time and was unable to avoid the man.
The Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office pronounced Brewer dead at the scene.
Zeringue said blood tests on Brewer are being conducted by the coroner’s office. Results are pending, he said.
Sanders passed a breath test at the scene, indicating he hadn’t been drinking prior to the accident.
Zeringue said Sanders was cited for careless operation of a motor vehicle.
The investigation into the fatal crash is ongoing, the spokesman said.
