Planning to ring in the New Year with fireworks? Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government is partnering with the Houma Police Department to make sure everyone has a fun and safe celebration with these tips!

10,200 people were treated in the ER in 2022 due to firework-caused burns, so Terrebonne Parish residents are encouraged to follow these safety protocols to avoid any severe injuries or death.

  • Verify your vendor: Request to see permitting information from any retail firework business before you buy.
  • Check the labels: Fireworks should be clearly labeled with the name of the item, the manufacturer’s name, and instructions for proper use.
  • Have your ID ready: You must be 18 years or older to buy fireworks. Vendors should always ask for your ID before purchasing to verify your age.
  • Measure your space: Detonate fireworks at least 200 feet away from structures, vehicles, and trash piles.
  • Act accordingly: Be aware of your surroundings and use clear judgement. Never detonate fireworks while impaired.
  • Dispose properly: Soak detonated fireworks in water before disposing them to reduce the risk of reignition and fires.
  • Supervise minors: People under 15 must have close supervision. Young children should NEVER detonate fireworks.

TPCG also encourages citizens to take into account the current drought that Terrebonne Parish is facing and the potential for fires to ignite quickly.

“As the final firework sales season is well underway, TPCG urges residents to be safe and knowledgeable when buying and using fireworks,” reads an official Facebook post from TPCG. “Residents are urged to be especially mindful of the ongoing drought in our area. Take into account the dryness of your surroundings when choosing a safe location for setting off fireworks, and be sure to properly soak detonated fireworks in water before disposing of them.”
Please be advised that it is also illegal to sell or ignite fireworks within the city limits of Houma.
