Quvenzhané Wallis will star in a contemporary adaptation of the Broadway musical and comic strip “Annie.”
“Quvenzhané Wallis is a true star and we believe her portrayal as Annie will make her a true worldwide star,” Sony production president Hannah Minghella said in a statement, according to multiple news outlets. “She is an extraordinary young talent with an amazing range, not only as an actress but as a singer and dancer, and we can’t wait for audiences to further discover her.”
The wunderkind actress, a fourth-grader at Elysian Fields School, became the youngest nominee for the Best Actress in a Leading Role Oscar for her part in the Terrebonne Parish-shot “Beasts of the Southern Wild.”
Quvenzhané was filed at 6 years old and had no previous acting experience. She played Hushpuppy, a same-age character who must navigate nature’s threats to her home and father.
Jennifer Lawrence won the Academy Award for her part in “Silver Linings Playbook.”
Houma’s budding star has a small role in “Twelve Years a Slave,” a Steve McQueen-directed flick starring Brad Pitt that is in the post-production phase, according to IMDb.
Will Gluck will direct the new “Annie,” and Will Smith and Jay-Z are among the producers.
