Houma Police arrested a local man Wednesday after he fled from a crash at the intersection of Grand Caillou Road and South Van Avenue, a department spokesman said.

Lt. Todd Duplantis said police were called to the scene around 7:54 p.m. A woman driving a 1999 maroon Chevrolet Malibu told police her car had been struck as she was traveling south in the right lane on Grand Caillou Road. She said as she passed through the intersection, a Dodge Neon, making a left turn on red onto South Van Avenue struck her car, the spokesman said. The driver of the Neon left the scene after the wreck, the woman told police.

Duplantis said officer’s noted moderate to severe damages on the front passenger side of the woman’s car.

A witness followed the Dodge to the 300 block of Mahler Street, and then notified police, Duplantis said.

When police arrived, Mazariego B. Sanchez, 36, of 623 Goode St., Houma, was attempted to repair moderate to severe damage to the rear passenger side of his 1998 Dodge Neon, he said.

Sanchez was arrested for hit and run driving, operating a vehicle without a lawful presence in the United States, and disobeying a red light. Duplantis said he was transported to the Terrebonne Parish Jail to await bond or trial.
