February 23, 2007Houma Police arrested a local man on drug charges Mardi Gras evening after he stole his father’s truck, according to a department spokesman.
Lt. Todd Duplantis said officers responded to a theft complaint in the 300 block of Glynn Avenue Tuesday night. A 53-year-old man told police he left for work at 1 p.m. that afternoon, and when he returned at 6 p.m., his 1997 Dodge Ram truck was missing. The man also reported a handgun had been taken.
Gone, too, was his son, Brad Dehart, 30, of 411 Melrose Ave., Duplantis said.
A BOLOn“be on the lookout”nwas issued on the truck, he said.
At 8:15 p.m., almost an hour after his father first notified police, Brad Dehart returned to the Glynn Avenue address in the truck, Duplantis said.
Police found Dehart hiding in a tin shed in the back yard of the residence, the spokesman said. Officers found a crumpled piece of brown paper towel in Dehart’s left hand. The paper contained a white powder substance believed to be cocaine, Duplantis said. The narcotic was seized for evidence.
Dehart told police he’d given his father’s gun to a man named “Keon” at a Van Avenue convenience store in exchange for the cocaine.
Dehart was charged with theft of a firearm and possession of cocaine.
If convicted, Duplantis said Dehart could face up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
