A two-day celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Houma-Thibodaux Roman Catholic Diocese concluded with a Mass at St. Francis de Sales Cathedral in downtown Houma, attended by parishioners from more than 20 Catholic churches throughout the region.

The diocese includes Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes and parts of St. Mary, Jefferson, St. Martin and Assumption parishes. It has an estimated population of 126,000.

“These 30 years have been a short period in the history of our area and our nation,” Bishop Sam Jacobs said during last Tuesday’s Mass. “They have been good years of God’s bountiful blessing to us.”

Following Communion, Archbishop Alfred C. Hughes of New Orleans spoke to the congregation. Before the Houma-Thibodaux Diocese formed in 1977, local churches were under the Diocese of New Orleans, he said.

Hughes thanked the diocese for its help following Hurricane Katrina, despite facing similar hardships only weeks later with Hurricane Rita.

“May you continue to inspire all of us who are here from all the surrounding dioceses,” he said.
