Houma Police arrested a local woman Sunday after she beat her 11-year-old daughter with a broomstick, a department spokesman said.

Officers arrested Tina L. Brown, 31, of 124 Jackson St., was arrested at 3:23 p.m. Sunday after police responded to a cruelty complaint, said Lt. Todd Duplantis. Officers noticed multiple marks on the child’s thighs, he said. The girl was also hit twice in the head with the broomstick, Duplantis said.

According to officers, Brown was intoxicated.

Brown was charged with cruelty to a juvenile. She was transported to the Terrebonne Parish Jail. If convicted of the charges, Duplantis said she could face up to a $1,000 fine and 10 years in prison.
