CSI New Orleans films episode in little Lafourche hamlet
September 2, 2014In an effort to make Lafourche Parish’s second longest road a safer place, the parish council will submit a resolution aiming for a reduce in future crashes.
Two separate areas of La. Highway 308 were the main causes of concern among parish councilmen at last Tuesday’s meeting – an area in Lockport where the road sits higher than the shoulder and an area near Raceland where many feel the speed limit needs to be reduced.
Council chairman Daniel Lorraine pointed out that a newly-paved area of La. Highway 308 in Lockport sits about an inch above the shoulder – something that he says could be dangerous if a vehicle slightly leaves the roadway.
“If you go off of there, when you bring your car back you actually lose control. I travel a lot and that’s going to cause some accidents,” Lorraine said.
He added that on his way to a recent council meeting, he noticed an accident in that area and was actually the one to call 911.
“Hopefully, nobody got hurt, but that needs to be addressed,” he said. “…I can’t understand how the state can come there and pave one inch and not even fix the shoulders. I mean, come on. With all the money that comes out of this parish, that’s what we get? They would have done better just taking a gallon of black paint and painting it, cause that’s what it looks like.”
In another area of La. Highway 308, councilman John Arnold would like to see a reduced speed limit.
“Between the elementary school and up toward the crossing, it’s basically the same thing there, but that speed limit needs to be reduced,” he said. “You’ve got a tremendous [number of] houses that are really close to that area. I’ve talked to some of those people, and I’ve had several people call me and ask me to bring it to the attention of somebody to try to get that speed limit reduced to 45 because the accidents through there are just tremendous.”
Leroy Foret, who lives along La. Highway 308 in that area, is among many residents fighting to see a reduced speed limit.
“I live on a bad curve where there’s been five or six wrecks, three killed,” Foret said. “…All the tractor trailers are on 308, the tankers, they go so fast that when you get to that curve they are completely to the left-hand side going to Raceland. And I’m waiting for somebody to be coming from Raceland, going to be a head on [collision], and they going to be dead.”
Foret said he has to be very careful leaving his property, and he calls for more officers patrolling this area to reduce the number of vehicles speeding through the curve.
“If we drop it down to five miles an hour, they still going to speed. They not going to stop unless you get patrol cars to watch them and give them tickets. Make them pay,” Foret said.
The council is expected to approve a resolution asking for the improvement of La. Highway 308 at next Tuesday’s council meeting.
