Lafayette woman caught shoplifting

Houma Police arrested a Lafayette woman Monday afternoon after she attempted to steal nearly 100 items from a local store, a department spokesman said.

Lt. Todd Duplantis said Shaneka M. Jones, 17, 307 Pamela St., took approximately 95 items n deli food, clothing, shoes, makeup, DVDs and CDs and other goods n valued over $600 and attempted to leave the Wal-Mart on Grand Caillou Road without paying for them.

Duplantis said Jones had placed some of the items inside a Rubbermaid tote, which she had purchased earlier. She used plastic bags taken from insider her purse to hide the remaining items, he said.

With the Rubbermaid tote and bagged items inside her shopping cart, Duplantis said the woman headed for the store exit.

Jones was charged with theft of goods more than $500.
