The Lafourche Parish School Board has been awarded $98,000 to purchase an emergency generator for the school board office in Thibodaux, as announced by the Louisiana Office of Community Development last Tuesday.

The school board’s current emergency generator is powered by natural gas, and it cannot maintain the office and the computer department, located next door.

“During Gustav, we were down, our mainframe and our network and all was down, so this way the smaller one will be able to run the computer department and the new, larger one will be able to run everything,” said Floyd Benoit, communications specialist and purchasing manager for the school board.

The new 225 kilowatt generator is also gas-powered and will turn itself on and off weekly to keep in tune for an emergency situation.

The central school board office may also serve as an emergency command post for Entergy to work from while restoring the parish’s power, Benoit said.

The funds are a portion of $24 million dedicated in disaster release funds for schools. The Plaquemines School Board received $11 million; St. Tammany Parish School Board was awarded $8.5 million; Delgado Community College’s City Park campus in New Orleans was awarded $3 million and Southern University will receive $1.5 million.

“These funds will help renovate several schools and create buildings that will allow some of the most impacted parishes to continue rebuilding after hurricanes Katrina and Rita,” Commissioner of Administration Paul Rainwater said in a press release.
