April 28, 2011The arrival of spring can mean only one thing in Louisiana, it’s time for lawmakers to reconvene in Baton Rouge.
Monday marked the start of the 2011 Regular Legislative Session. The session is slated to end June 21.
As of press time, members of the House had filed 592 bills. Meanwhile, the Senate will address 251 pre-filed measures.
In this non-fiscal year, local lawmakers are tasked with eliminating a $1.6 billion budget gap. Lawmakers will have to decide on whether or not to revamp the state’s retirement system and will face the uncomfortable reality of cutting state jobs at one point.
The state’s higher education institutions will also be examined, as bills to remove the 12-hour tuition cap and TOPS scholarship limits are debated in the legislature.
The following is a compilation of measures Tri-parish lawmakers have pre-filed for this Legislative session.
