Two candidates have qualified the Greater Lafourche Port Commission seat held by the late Johnny Melancon, who died suddenly in October 2010.

Melancon’s son, John Jr., has held “Seat G” on an interim basis until an election can be held April 2.

He and former commissioner Harry Cheramie are seeking election to fulfill the late Melancon’s term, which ends December 2012. Port commissioners are elected to serve six-year terms.

Registered voters in Lafourche’s Ward 10 will have the final say on who will represent them.

As the only elected port board in the state, the Greater Lafourche Port Commission is expressly mentioned in the Louisiana Constitution.
