BP America is the latest area company to dig deep into its pocket to benefit the Bayou Area Habitat for Humanity.

At a ceremony on Bon Jovi Boulevard earlier this month, BP America representatives were on hand to give $75,000 toward the housing program.

“Having a company such as BP make a donation of this size is a tremendous boost for the affiliate,” said Jeremy Becker, executive director of the local Habitat for Humanity organization. “We have been blessed to have the support of so many local companies since the hurricanes and we are grateful to now have BP join us in our rebuilding efforts.”

With BP’s donation, a home will be built for Henrietta Evans, a mother of two and grandmother of two. The former New Orleanian lost her home in Hurricane Katrina.

“We support Habitat for Humanity with employee volunteer efforts and financial contributions,” said John Huston, BP operations project manager. “Habitat delivers sustainable value to so many communities and we are proud to be a part of the Houma project.”

Becker said the local Habitat program – which provides houses to low-income families in Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes – relies on volunteers and donations. The workers help with every aspect of construction, and donations provide the needed building materials, he said.

Skilled and unskilled volunteers can register at www.bayouhabitat.org or, at the office, at (985) 447-6999.
