February 27, 2009Chett Chiasson, director of economic development for the Greater Lafourche Port Commission, will become the port’s new executive director in January 2010 following the retirement of longtime executive director Ted Falgout on Dec. 31.
Chiasson was named as Falgout’s successor at the port’s board of commissioners meeting two weeks ago. The state-run commission manages Port Fourchon and the Leonard Miller Airport in Galliano.
Chiasson’s career with the port began in 2005 when he was hired as the economic development and grants administrator. He was named economic development director in January 2008. Chiasson has a bachelor’s degree in political science and a Master of Public Administration, both from LSU.
Falgout became the port’s first executive director in 1978. The facility, built in 1960, had no director before then, Chiasson said. His tenure will coincide with the port’s 50th anniversary.
“When we hired Chett, we knew he had qualities that would afford him the opportunities for advancement, and he has worked very hard to develop the skills necessary to lead this organization into the future,” Falgout stated in a news release. “I am confident the future of the port is in good hands with Chett.”
Chiasson’s selection several months before Falgout’s retirement will allow him to learn about the new position.
“I have been working closely with Ted, but in the next 10 months I will be working closer,” Chiasson said.
In March, Chiasson will go to Washington, D.C., with Falgout.
Among the major projects facing Chiasson when he becomes director will be work on constructing a 7,000-foot slip that will add 400 acres to the port’s existing 1,400 acres. Chiasson said permission to begin work should be received within three months.
Completion is currently nearing on another 7,000-foot slip that will also occupy 400 acres.
Chiasson said the port will continue working on recovery projects related to hurricanes Gustav and Ike into 2010. Running into next year as well, the port commission will be constructing the first half of a parallel taxiway to the runway at the airport.
