Larry K. Burleigh Sr., who began practicing law in Morgan City, has been selected by his peers for inclusion in the 2007 edition of The Best Lawyers in America.

This marks his 20th consecutive appearance in the publication.

Burleigh is one of only three area attorneys to be consistently named in The Best Lawyers in America in maritime law and personal injury litigation since the listing was first published by Naifeh and Smith in 1987.

The annual publication is widely regarded — by both the legal profession and the public — as the definitive guide to legal excellence in the United States.

Originally from Jeanerette, Burleigh still has a client base in Morgan City although he relocated his firm to Lafayette in the early 1990s. His specialty is maritime personal injury and product liability litigation. A graduate of UL Lafayette and Loyola University, Burleigh frequently appears as a guest lecturer at seminars and has taught courses at Duke University and Harvard Law School, including basic trial tactics such as opening statements, jury selection, direct examination, cross-examination, medical records and evidence.

In 2003, Burleigh was recognized by the Association of Trial Lawyers of America as a Diplomate of Trial Advocacy, an award presented for his more than 400 hours of teaching trial tactics for the National College of Advocacy, the education arm of the ATLA. The award acknowledged his commitment to the effective representation of his clients through continuous professional development.

Every year, more than 50 percent of Best Lawyers’ 24,000 voters nationwide complete and return their ballots. Because of this unprecedented return rate, the current edition of Best Lawyers is based on 1.8 million confidential evaluations by only the top attorneys in the country — by far the most extensive database developed by any lawyer survey, according to the compendium’s publisher. Best Lawyers’ Web site, www.bestlawyers.com, receives upwards of 1.5 million hits each year and responds to more than 700,000 requests for lawyer searches.
