Instead of throwing beads for a flash of flesh this Mardi Gras, help save the flesh by purchasing a Cannata’s Gooey Butter Snickerdoodle King Cake between now and Feb. 13.

“When you purchase a Gooey Butter Snickerdoodle King Cake, please tell the cashier that you would like to donate 10 percent to the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at Terrebonne General Medical Center,” said Amy Ponson, director of center development. “This is our first time hosting this fundraiser, and we hope to make about $500, which will fuel the Early Bird Mobile Medical Unit for one month.”

King cakes purchased online at www.cannataskingcakes.com/marybird will also benefit the fundraiser, and all the proceeds will help provide free cancer screenings to those in the Bayou Region. The next mobile medical unit cancer screening will be a breast cancer screening from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Cannata’s in Morgan City. Appointments must be made by calling 1-888-616-4687.

“Amy Ponson with the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center approached us about the partnership, and we jumped at the idea,” said Joel Ohmer, head of marketing at Cannata’s. “My family and the Cannata family have both been touched by cancer. We are excited for two local businesses to be partnering for such a great cause, and we jumped at the chance to make a difference in the community.”

Ohmer did not have a tally on the number of King Cakes sold so far, but did say that the donation option was getting a good response from customers.

“Those who are ordering any King Cake online can donate to the cause as well,” Ohmer said.
