April 24, 2009The South Lafourche Leonard Miller Jr. Airport is flying high these days, courtesy of the high marks awarded to the facility by the state Department of Transportation and Development’s Aviation Division.
“[The airport has] done an excellent job of maintaining and improving the facilities,” LADOTD Aviation Director James P. Jones said in a letter following his inspection earlier this year.
Annual safety and compliance inspections include maintenance and operations reviews, ensuring the airport complies with state and federal regulations.
The previous year, the South Lafourche airport was hailed for extending and widening its runway and adding lighting.
The 2009 review echoed that report, with Jones saying the facility “is in excellent condition overall.”
Work continues at the airport on a partial parallel taxiway adjacent to the runway. The facility received a $6.5 million grant for several projects under way – including the taxiway – and other improvements.
“The foresight of our commissioners, along with the hard work of our capable employees, has again proven our community’s ability to develop and grow industry if given the opportunity,” said Davie Breaux, director of operations for the Greater Lafourche Port Commission, which oversees running the airport. “Because of the commission’s commitment to excellence, millions of dollars are being invested by new tenants at our airport, making it a viable asset to the community’s thriving seaport operations.”
In 2006, the Federal Aviation Administration named the facility Outstanding Louisiana Airport, topping much larger airports in Baton Rouge and New Orleans.
