August 28, 2008The Terrebonne Economic Development Authority (TEDA) announces a series of workshops designed to assist small-business owners with one of the nation’s most popular off-the-shelf bookkeeping software.
The five-week series will help businesses master the QuickBooks program and help sharpen bookkeeping skills, according to Katherine Gilbert, TEDA’s business retention and expansion director.
“It’s part of TEDA’s mission to provide training opportunities for the small business owner or entrepreneurial starter,” Gilbert said. “We held a QuickBook overview in July and had a great response. We did a survey and asked the participants what they needed training on. The feedback led us to believe that there was a desire in the small-business community for further training.”
The series begins Sept. 3.
• Week one is an overview of the accounting program, giving an understanding of how the program can be used in the business.
• The second week is comprised of learning common terms used in the program, how to move around in the program and other introductory aspects.
• The third week’s lesson deals with working with bank accounts: working with registers, reconciling accounts, tracking credit card transactions, types of asset and liability accounts.
• The fourth week teaches how to manage sales information: different types of forms, creating invoices, working with items and item lists, recording and processing payments and tracking and paying sales tax.
• The final week is about entering and paying bills, entering discounts, setting up payroll, printing payrolls checks and tracking tax liabilities.
All classes will be conducted from 6-8 p.m. in the Distance Education room in the Terrebonne Parish Main Library, 151 Civic Center Boulevard in Houma. The classes will be taught Sept. 3, 10, 17, 24 and Oct. 1.
Space for the class is limited and those interested are asked to call TEDA at (985)-873-6890 to reserve a seat.
