A sheriff’s deputy who fatally shot a Thibodaux family’s dog has been cleared of wrongdoing.

The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office said Friday that Deputy Brad Ross used proper force to defend himself against a 160-pound English mastiff on Sept. 17. Ross had been investigating complaints about roaming dogs.

The dog’s owner complained that the animal was shot unnecessarily.

The sheriff’s office said that Ross fired twice to avoid being bitten.
