July 22, 2010An LSU AgCenter watershed management expert advises boaters to quickly clean any oil that gets onto their boats as they enjoy the decision to open state waters to recreational fishing.
Brian LeBlanc says fishermen can’t always avoid oiled areas. Oil can stain boats if it’s not quickly cleaned.
LeBlanc says a light sheen should be wiped immediately with an absorbent pad, then power washed, using household dishwashing detergent to clean oily areas.
He notes that it may be hard to find a place to pressure wash oil, which requires special collection and treatment to avoid contaminating more water.
He says heavy oil may have to be chipped off. The first step would be to use mineral spirits or other solvents. He says that would be followed by steps for cleaning sheen – possibly many times.
