An intoxicated Montegut man was arrested Friday night after he punched several times a Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s deputy who had ordered him to get out of the street, a Houma Police spokesman said.

Lt. Todd Duplantis said Deputy Roy Pennington placed the “officer needs assistance” call at 11:14 p.m. Officers rushed to the East Park Recreation Center area where they found Pennington holding down Rusty Authement, 18, of 413 Aragon Rd., he said.

Pennington said he was driving north on East Park Avenue when he spotted Authement in the middle of the road stopping traffic, Duplantis said. The deputy told Authement to get out of the road, but the Montegut man refused and began flashing obscene gestures at Pennington, he explained.

Authement then attacked Pennington, hitting him four or five times in the face, Duplantis said. The deputy subdued Authement on the ground and called for assistance, the spokesman said.

The deputy was not injured in the incident, Duplantis said.

Authement was arrested for battery of a police officer, simple obstruction of a highway and disturbing the peace by intoxication.
